🏠 Roof Pitch Calculator
Enter the pitch any way you know it — rise/run, degrees, or ratio — and everything stays in sync, with a live visual diagram, roof surface area, rafter length, and a materials estimate.
Roof area uses the standard pitch-multiplier method (footprint area ÷ cos of the pitch angle), which applies accurately to both gable and hip roofs of uniform pitch. Rafter length is the common rafter (ridge to eave) along the slope, including the overhang extended along the same angle. Material quantities are estimates for planning purposes — always have a roofer confirm exact measurements and local building code requirements (including minimum pitch for your chosen roofing material) before ordering materials or planning installation.

No complicated roofing formulas required. Just enter your measurements and let the calculator do the math. 🔢✨
📐 What Is Roof Pitch?
Roof pitch describes how much a roof rises vertically for every 12 inches of horizontal run.
For example:
- 3:12 = 3 inches of rise for every 12 inches of run
- 6:12 = 6 inches of rise for every 12 inches of run
- 9:12 = 9 inches of rise for every 12 inches of run
- 12:12 = 12 inches of rise for every 12 inches of run, which equals a 45° roof angle
A higher pitch generally means a steeper roof.
🧮 How to Use the Roof Pitch Calculator
Using the calculator is simple:
1️⃣ Choose Your Roof Pitch
Select a common preset such as 2:12, 4:12, 6:12, 8:12, 10:12, or 12:12, or enter your own rise.
2️⃣ Enter Building Dimensions
Enter your:
- Building width
- Building length
- Roof overhang
- Roof type
You can choose between a gable roof and hip roof.
3️⃣ Add Material Settings
Open the Material Estimate section to enter your preferred:
- Waste factor
- Bundles per roofing square
The calculator then estimates the amount of roofing material required.
4️⃣ Review Your Results
You’ll receive an instant breakdown of your:

🏡 Gable Roof vs. Hip Roof
The calculator supports two common roof styles.
🔺 Gable Roof
A gable roof has two sloping roof surfaces that meet at a central ridge. It is one of the most common and straightforward residential roof designs.
🔻 Hip Roof
A hip roof slopes down toward all sides of the building. Because of its additional roof sections, its geometry and material requirements can differ from a simple gable roof.
Selecting the appropriate roof type helps the calculator provide a more useful ridge-length estimate.
🪵 What Is Rafter Length?
Rafter length is the sloping distance from the ridge to the eave.
The calculator uses the building width, roof pitch, and overhang to estimate the common rafter length.
This can be helpful when planning roof framing or estimating the length of lumber required for common rafters.
🧱 What Is a Roofing Square?
Roofing materials are commonly measured in squares.
1 roofing square = 100 square feet of roof surface.
For example, a roof with approximately 2,000 square feet of surface area represents about 20 roofing squares before adding waste.
The calculator applies your selected waste percentage to help estimate the quantity of material that may need to be purchased.
📦 Estimate Shingles & Underlayment
The calculator can also provide a basic material estimate.
Enter your expected waste factor and bundles per square, and it calculates an approximate number of shingle bundles.
It also estimates underlayment rolls based on the calculated roofing area.
💡 Tip: Roofing waste can vary depending on roof complexity, cuts, valleys, hips, penetrations, installation method, and material type. A simple rectangular roof may require less waste than a complex roof.
⚠️ Important Roof Pitch Considerations
Roof pitch can affect more than just appearance.
A roof’s slope can influence:
- 🌧️ Water drainage
- ❄️ Snow accumulation
- 🧱 Suitable roofing materials
- 🪵 Structural requirements
- 🧰 Installation difficulty
- 💰 Labor and material costs
- 🦺 Installer safety requirements
Very low-slope roofs may require roofing systems specifically designed for low slopes, while steep roofs can require additional fall-protection measures.
Always follow the roofing manufacturer’s installation requirements and applicable local building codes.
🔢 Roof Pitch Formula
If you know the rise and run, the roof angle can be calculated using:
Roof Angle = arctan(Rise ÷ Run)
For the standard 12-inch run:
Angle = arctan(Rise ÷ 12)
For example, a 6:12 roof has:
Angle = arctan(6 ÷ 12) ≈ 26.6°
The calculator performs this conversion automatically.
📐 Roof Pitch Multiplier
The roof pitch multiplier converts the building’s horizontal footprint into the approximate sloped roof surface area.
The multiplier is:
√(Rise² + 12²) ÷ 12
For a 6:12 roof, the multiplier is approximately 1.118.
That means a roof’s sloped surface area is greater than its horizontal footprint because the roof follows a diagonal slope.
